National Origin
HOME has released its newly updated National Origin Fact Sheet, designed to help individuals better understand their rights under the Fair Housing Act. This resource outlines the definition of national origin and explains how this protected class is safeguarded against housing discrimination.
National Origin is defined by a person’s birthplace, language, customs, or family heritage. People cannot be denied housing or face different standards based on their name, accent, appearance, or participation in customs associated with any nationality.
The fact sheet also highlights important considerations, such as how immigration status may be tied to national origin, and what discrimination can look like in practice. These actions are not always obvious, so it’s important to know what they look like. Whether it’s a landlord requiring a higher security deposit for someone who is not a citizen or a housing provider refusing to rent to someone whose primary language isn’t English, these actions are violations of fair housing law.
